Belvedere Sports Day and Croke Park

A morning of sport and host brother fun at Belvedere--the beautiful Dublin weather pushed us inside for mash up of rugby and basketball--complete with court-side commentating! 


"Today, the 2018-2019 BCHigh-Belvedere exchange students took part in the long standing tradition of sports competitions on the last day. This year, the two schools faced off in an intense basketball game. Five teams consisting of both Belvedere and BCHigh students on each team played one another to rise above the rest. While effort, determination, and skill was shown by all the teams, the yellow team rose up to achieve victory. Defeating the black team in the finals, they stood undefeated. With only minor bumps and bruises, we had another successful day of sporting competition with the students at Belvedere."

Phil Hogan, a former Irish Olympian and Belvedere teacher gave the boys a wonderful talk before the sports began!


"After a delicious lunch at an Italian diner, we set off for a tour of Croke Park. We started off by walking through the tunnels where the players go from their locker rooms out onto the field. Then we had a look at the players lounge where they go after the finals to interact with one another, but there is a strict and respected rule of no disputes. Then we took a look at the locker rooms and watched a quick video on the mindset of a hurling player before he entered the match. Afterwards, we went up to the VIP area where the President of Ireland would have sat if he were at Croke Park. Finally we walked up to the top sections of the stadium where we got a great overlook of the stadium as well as visited the corporate lounge to end the tour."

The North Country: Belfast and the Antrim Coast

Today, we hauled onto the bus and crossed the border between the Republic of Ireland and the Unionist Ireland. We stopped in the Northern capital, Belfast; there we learned about "the troubles", drove down the main streets of the Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods and then we all signed our names on the peace wall that separates them. We also went to the Titanic Museum, on the orginal grounds where the Titanic was built. Then we got back on the bus and drove all the way up to the northernmost part of the Irish island - we saw a lot of the places where Game of Thrones was filmed. Then we went to the Rope Bridge, and walked across that (none of us were scared :)). We finished the day at Giant’s Causeway, and walked all the way to the top of the cliffs. Belvedere, James Joyce and Trinity College

Today was our first official day at Belvedere. We spent the morning interacting with students and faculty and then set out into the lovely Dublin rain to learn about the city’s rich literary and educational history. In the morning we watched Sing Street, which is a new coming of age film about high schoolers in Dublin. The main character of the film is a Belvedere graduate. We then we saw the urban farm on the roof of the school where they grow vegetables. They use fish and pumps to grow the plants. They also keep bees on the roof. After lunch, we went to the James Joyce Center and learned about him and his work. Then we went to Trinity College and saw the Book of Kells which was written around 800 AD. The Final Weekend

"This weekend was very enjoyable. Saturday was a “chill out” day, where we had an amazing brunch and saw local things. On Sunday, I was fortunate to see the beautiful cliff side of Howth. It was an outstanding view, although very windy. I really enjoyed seeing Dublin with my host brother." --Sam Dossantos
